Yes. Titanium Dioxide (TiO₂) is approved as a food colourant under FSSAI regulations in India as INS 171. It is permitted in confectionery, bakery products, and food coatings. Note: The European Union banned E171 in 2022 for food use based on genotoxicity concerns. For products exported to the EU, alternative white pigments should be considered. Pharma grade TiO₂ for tablet coatings remains approved globally.

Food Grade TiO₂ should have a mean particle size of 200–300 nm for optimal whiteness and opacity. Nanoparticle forms (primary particle size NLT 100 nm in median dimension) are subject to special regulatory scrutiny in some markets. Food-grade TiO₂ used in India must comply with FSSAI specifications for TiO₂ content (NLT 99%), heavy metals, and arsenic.
